Christian Science is a 1907 book by the American writer Mark Twain (1835–1910). The book is a collection of essays Twain wrote about Christian Science, beginning with an article that was published in Cosmopolitan in 1899. Although Twain was interested in mental healing and the ideas behind Christian Science, he was hostile towards its founder, Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910).

Background

Twain’s first article about Christian Science was published in Cosmopolitan in 1899. A humorous work of fiction, it describes how he fell over a cliff while walking in Austria, breaking several bones. A Christian Science practitioner who lived nearby was sent for, but could not attend immediately and so undertook to provide an “absent healing.” She sent a message asking Twain to wait overnight and to remember that there was nothing wrong with him:

I thought there must be some mistake.

“Did you tell her I walked off a cliff seventy-five feet high?”

“Yes.”

“And struck a boulder at the bottom and bounced?”

“Yes.”

“And struck another one and bounced again?”

“Yes.”

“And struck another one and bounced yet again?”

“Yes.”

“And broke the boulders?”

“Yes.”

“That accounts for it; she is thinking of the boulders. Why didn’t you tell her I got hurt, too?”

In the third chapter of this story (as published in the book form described below), Twain estimates more than 120 fractures, some or many of which were visible to him, as well as 7 dislocated joints, including his hips, shoulders, knees and neck. All of these were healed within three hours of the “Christian Science doctor’s” visit of the second day of the story. Immediately following this healing, he turns to the local country horse doctor to cure a headache and stomach ache.

In 1907 he collected this and several other critical articles he had written and published them as a book, Christian Science. Twain himself believed that mind could influence matter to some degree. He nevertheless took strong exception to the writings of Eddy, calling them “incomprehensible and uninterpretable.” He was particularly incensed by the thought that Eddy was using Christian Science to accrue wealth and power for herself.

Operating his own advertising business Barry constantly crunched for time is reminded by secretary, friend that his wife is having their baby now. He rushes off in his 70’s ford bronco. And just in time to watch his lovely wife Susie, bare their new family member – Abe Kaufman, from the onset the infant child become’s ill, mumps, measles, ear infection’s that perforate both ear drum’s and create many concern’s about the boy’s hearing? As well Abe doesn’t seem to have any response mechanisms, at all. Obviously living in his own world of senses and very little if any response to other stimuli. Creating much confusion and many concern’s about Abe’s ability to connect with his family, and their family organism? The father begin’s his own investigation’s reading from medical journal’s etc,. Thus Barry find’s Autism, and read’s the symptom’s to his wife, Suzie, ouch, Suzie’s not ready to hear she has a non-normal child? Barry encourages her about the situation and she understand’s. Thus this loving couple request help from their friends to watch over the other children whilst they go on a nation wide search by plain to investigate so called treatment’s? Of course all they find are fossil treatment’s, even so called doctor’s calling their child a (thing)? So called Treatment’s like locking the mis-behaving child in a wooden locker, about 3′ x 3′ for hour’s to correct behavior’s. Locking several youngster together in one small room, 8′ x 8′ and leaving them together for hour’s? Forced manipulation like forcing their arm’s and leg’s to perform crawling gesture’s at the age of 8,9, 10 year’s? Watching the alarming facial, body language is humorous?  After all these frustrating experience’s and a doctor telling them the only solution is institutionalizing their child, home bound they went. Now Barry and Suzie are loving compassionate parent’s and sense there is a better way. Thus Barry and Suzing come up with a plan to put Abe in a smaller less stimulating room for his new therapy? They choose the downstairs bathroom, about 8′ x 8′ room. And Suzie begins’ rocking with Abe, rocking and rocking, while Abe spin’s a plate and flaps his arm’s and hands, Suzie counter’s with same action’s. All the while Barry is documenting result’s, and of course their are the other children feeling left out, and with their own challenges, Barry and Suzie encourage and invite all the help with Abe. Thus after several month’s and lot’s of loving encouragement, Little Abe begin’s to respond to stimuli, and even begin’s to express himself trying very hard to speak, and every instance encouragement is the response. Now Barry and Suzie call a local institution and invite a filming on their remarkable achievements with their son. And of course the crystallized reaction is to no avail? But Abe has remarkable improvements, and is responding very well to the point of becoming reoriented into his loving family. I haven’t watched this movie to the new beginning?

The Freshman is a 1925 comedy film that tells the story of a college freshman trying to become popular by joining the school football team. It stars Harold Lloyd, Jobyna Ralston, Brooks Benedict and James Anderson. It remains one of Lloyd’s most successful and enduring films.

The film was written by John Grey, Sam Taylor, Tim Whelan and Ted Wilde. It was directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor.

In 1990, The Freshman was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”, going in the second year of voting and being one of the first 50 films to receive such an honor.

Harold Lamb (Harold Lloyd), a bright-eyed but naïve young man, enrolls at Tate University. On the train there, he meets Peggy (Jobyna Ralston). They are attracted to each other.

Harold decides the best way to ensure his popularity at school is to emulate his movie idol, The College Hero, down to mimicking a little jig he does before greeting anyone, and taking his nickname, “Speedy”. However, the College Cad (Brooks Benedict) quickly makes him the butt of an ongoing joke, of which the freshman remains blissfully unaware. Harold thinks he is popular, when in fact he is the laughing stock of the whole school. His only real friend is Peggy, who turns out to be his landlady’s daughter, described in one of the film’s title cards as “what your mother was like when she was young”.

He tries out for the football team. The coach (Pat Harmon) is unimpressed, but as Harold has damaged their only practice tackle dummy, the coach uses him in its place. At the end of practice, though he approves of Harold’s enthusiasm (undiminished after repeated tackling), the coach is about to dismiss the freshman when Chet Trask (James Anderson), the captain and star of the team, suggests making him their water boy, while letting him think he has made the squad.

Harold is persuaded to host the annual “Fall Frolic” dance. His tailor is late making his suit; with the dance well underway, it is barely being held together by basting stitches, but Harold puts it on and hopes for the best. During the party, his clothes start to fall apart, despite the efforts of the tailor (hiding in a side room) to effect repairs. When Harold sees the College Cad being too forward with Peggy, working as a hatcheck girl, Harold knocks him down. The incensed Cad then tells him just what everyone really thinks of him. Peggy advises him to stop putting on an act and be himself.

Harold is determined to prove himself by getting into the big football game. His chance comes when the other team proves too tough, injuring so many of Tate College’s players that the coach runs out of substitutes. Hounded by Harold and warned that he will forfeit if he cannot come up with another player, the coach reluctantly lets Harold go in. The first few plays are disastrous. Finally, he breaks free and is on his way to winning the game, but, mindful of a referee’s prior instruction that he is to stop playing when he hears the whistle, drops the football just outside the end zone when a non-football whistle sounds. The other team recovers the ball with only a minute left to play. His teammates are disheartened, but Harold rouses them to make a final effort. He chases down the opposing ball carrier, knocks the football loose, scoops it up and runs it all the way back for the winning touchdown as time runs out. Tate prevails by a score of 6 to 3, which at last earns him the respect and popularity he was after. To top it off, Peggy passes him a note proclaiming her love for him.

Background
The Freshman was Lloyd’s most successful silent film of the 1920s, and was hugely popular at the time of its release. It sparked a craze for college films that lasted well beyond the 1920s. Exteriors were filmed near the USC campus in Los Angeles. The game sequence was shot on the field at the Rose Bowl, and the crowd scenes were shot at halftime at California Memorial Stadium during the November 1924 Big Game between UC Berkeley and Stanford University. The football game sequence was reused by Lloyd and director Preston Sturges in Lloyd’s last film, The Sin of Harold Diddlebock (1947).

The Freshman is widely considered one of Lloyd’s most hilarious, well-constructed films. It was one of Lloyd’s few films to remain widely available after the sound era, and Lloyd reissued the film (with cuts) and used extended scenes in compilation films of the 1960s. The DVD release of Lloyd’s films in 2004 includes the full, restored version as shown in the 1920s.

On September 23rd, 2015, Complex uploaded a video in which Khaled shows off his sneaker closet. During the segment, Khaled says the phrase “Congratulations, you played yourself” (shown below).  As of March 2016, the video has received over 2.1 million views.
