Jean Delville (Belgian, 1867-1953) The School of Plato, 1898
Like a nude Last Supper, 12 disciples listen to the words of their spiritual mentor. In this case, the bearded man in the center is Plato. The painting celebrates the beauty of androgyny. Plato wrote that human beings were descended from mixed-gender divine beings; this painting shows the students touching each other freely, in a world of peacocks and wisteria, where gender is fluid.  (Gwllym Llywdd)
