The Cosmic Horseshoe

The Cosmic Horseshoe is a spectacular gravitational lens, or what is known as an almost perfect Einstein Ring. The enormous gravity of a foreground galaxy cluster is magnifying the light from a more distant galaxy into a circle around it. And now, astronomers have worked out that the galaxy cluster contains a supermassive black hole with 36 billion times the mass of the Sun, one of the most massive ever measured in the Universe. This system is about five and a half billion light years from us. (New Thinking Allowed)
