If we lived in the 16th century, we could be fined for not attending the Sunday Meeting
By Mike Zonta, BB editor (and ChatGPT)
ChatGPT:
After the Reformation, England had laws requiring attendance at the established church. Under Elizabeth I, for example, the Act of Uniformity of 1559 required people to attend church on Sundays and major holy days. Failure to attend could result in fines.
The situation changed with the monarch:
- Henry VIII: England broke with Rome, but Henry retained much traditional Catholic worship while making himself head of the English church.
- Edward VI (1547–1553): England moved decisively toward Protestant worship.
- Mary I (1553–1558): Catholicism was restored, and Protestant worship was suppressed.
- Elizabeth I (1558–1603): Protestantism was restored, and attendance at the Church of England became legally compulsory.
- James I (1603–1625): The requirement continued into Shakespeare’s lifetime.
But there’s an important distinction: being legally required to attend church didn’t mean everyone actually went. Enforcement varied considerably, and some people—especially Catholics and religious dissenters—deliberately refused to attend the established church and paid the penalties.
For Shakespeare’s England, therefore, church attendance wasn’t simply a matter of personal religious choice as we think of it today; it was also a legal and social obligation.

Excerpt : “There is a Beatles song that’s very popular. The title of the song is ‘All You Need Is Love’. Now, this is dead wrong. It should be the other way around: All Love Needs is You. Love needs practitioners of love; love needs doers of love. Love is courage – that is, the daring to accept the foredoomed happiness that will come to anyone who learns how to love.”
