“The mystic and the physicist arrive at the same conclusion; one starting from the inner realm, the other from the outer world. The harmony between their views confirms ancient wisdom… that the ultimate reality without, is identical to… the reality within.”

New Thinking Jun 16, 2023 This video is a special release from the original Thinking Allowed series that ran on public television from 1986 until 2002. It was recorded in about 1996. Fritjof Capra, PhD, is author of The Tao of Physics, Uncommon Wisdom, The Turning Point, Belonging to the Universe and The Web of Life: A New Scientific Understanding of Living Systems. He is founding director of the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley, California, and is on the faculty of Schumacher College in England. Here he points out that many new trends have been converging in the field of biology – including systems theory, complexity theory, chaos theory, fractile geometry, the Gaia hypothesis, the theory of dissipative structures, and the theory of autopoeisis. Taken together, these perspectives suggest a new approach to the understanding of living systems which is neither mechanistic nor vitalistic. The fundamental maxim of the systems approach is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. At certain levels of complexity, properties such as life emerge. Consciousness, Capra points out, is intimately connected with life. Now you can watch all of the programs from the original Thinking Allowed Video Collection, hosted by Jeffrey Mishlove.
