The Freudian clash of unconscious desires with conscious behavior is characterized by British psychologist Donald Bannister “as a darkened cellar in which a struggle goes on between a sex-crazed chimpanzee [the id] and a Victorian spinster [the superego] with a nervous Swiss bank clerk [the ego] serving as referee.”
