Mars Conjunct Chiron – The Spin Doctor

by Astro Butterfly – July 13, 2020 (

On July 14th, Mars is conjunct Chiron at 9° Aries. This is one of the important transits of 2020 because:

  • It occurs only once every 2 years, marking the beginning of a new Mars-Chiron cycle.
  • It occurs when Chiron is stationary retrograde. Slow-moving planets such as Chiron are most powerful when stationary. Because Chiron is stationary, the upcoming Mars-Chiron cycle will be even more intense.
  • Chiron is the only planet that ‘shares’ the sign of Aries with Mars. Because Mars goes retrograde later this year, Mars will spend a record of 6 months in Aries, however, no other planet, except for Chiron, will be in Aries. Mars in Aries and Mars retrograde will have a strong Chiron – wounding and healing– flavor.

Mars conjunct Chiron is the “Spin Doctor”. “Doctor” because Chiron is the Wounded Healer. And “spin” because Chiron is stationary retrograde, changing direction. Before healing can take place, Mars will spin the knife and stab through the pain.

“Spin doctor” is also a metaphor for someone (a PR, consultant, or spokesperson) who is employed to give a favorable interpretation of events to the media, on behalf of a political party.

The spin doctor takes money to flip reality and make people in power even more powerful, even if that goes against other people’s personal interests.

We have spin doctors everywhere: politicians, government officials, lobbyists, journalists, salespeople and pretty much everyone who is knowingly distorting reality for personal gain.

We too, are spin doctors, and Mars conjunct Chiron is an opportunity for introspection and awareness, to understand why, how and when that happens.

Before we blame politicians and journalists for being “sellouts” we have to ask how much of a spin doctor we are ourselves.

Let’s take pandemic/vaccines for example, since these are important topics at the moment.

There are two approaches that take the concept of the spin doctor to the extreme: people who don’t take measures to curb the spread of disease for purely egotistical reasons “I do what I want”. This is wounding (Chiron) by putting one’s personal will (Mars) first.

And then we have the other approach: “Everyone should wear masks/get vaccinated/laws should be enforced”, even if that means to limit other people’s personal freedom (Mars).

If in the first case the selfish motivations are pretty straight forward, in the 2nd, they are less evident, because the approach is motivated by the “greater good”.

However, every time we are convinced we know what that “greater good” is, everytime we believe we have the right to ask other people to live their lives the way we believe they should, we become a spin doctor.

Mars In Aries – “I Am”

As long as Mars will circle around the Sun, personal will will exist.

We cannot ‘shut down’ Mars. Neither in ourselves, nor in others.

The more we try to shut it down, the angrier Mars gets.

There is a reason why Mars rules Aries, the 1st sign of the zodiac. Without Mars, there will be no more “I”, there will be no more life. We need Mars’ ‘selfish’ drive to live and fulfill its personal agenda.

And as frustrating as it is to live with other people that have their own Mars agenda, this is just part – and a prerequisite – of life.

Chiron – The Wounded Healer, The Wounded Wounder

Chiron is known as the Wounded Healer, and it is associated with the process of healing by exposing one’s deepest wound.

However, to get there, we have to go through a painful process of reconciliation. Chiron is not all nice and sweet. Chiron can be the Wounded Wounder just as much he is the Wounded Healer.

Chiron, the half-man, half-horse centaur, is a symbol of the duality we need to reconcile within ourselves.

The more we try to distance ourselves from that 50% we find undesirable, the more split we become at an identity level, and the more we distance ourselves from healing, which can only take place through the process of reconciliation.

Going deep inside ourselves and admitting there’s 50% of us that is selfish and cruel is NOT easy. It is always difficult. If it doesn’t hurt, if we don’t feel comfortable, it doesn’t happen.

At first, it’s almost impossible, because it goes against our survival instinct. That’s why it’s easier – as a first step to healing – to project the 50% onto the other.

Chiron is now in Aries, the sign of “I am”. The opposite sign, Libra, is the sign of the “Other”, the sign of projection. What we don’t/can’t see and understand within ourselves, we project onto others.

What is very interesting is that the Aries/Libra axis is very Chiron-sensitive. Chiron’s perihelion, the closest point to the Sun in his orbit is in Libra, while his most distant point from the Sun, aphelion, is in Aries.

This means Chiron is very good at doing the “Libra” thing, i.e. splitting and projecting (and later, hopefully, healing by reconciling) but it is not so good at “I am”, at taking charge, at claiming its identity as a 50% Wounded Healer, and 50% Wounded Wounder.

Mars Conjunct Chiron – The Spin Doctor

But that’s why we have Mars. Mars is in domicile (and very strong) in Aries. Mars has the upper hand here, and will “force” Chiron to expose the Chironic process of split/wounding and take ownership of it.

Chiron will also help Mars to see where he is too selfish and where he seeks – consciously and unconsciously – personal gain at the expense of other people’s personal gains.

Mars conjunct Chiron is our opportunity to see where we are spin doctors. Where we deform reality to seek personal gain.

When we do that, two beautiful things happen: 1). We understand when others do the same, and we are much less likely to be the victim of other Wounded Wounders, and 2). We find empathy for ourselves and others, and we heal.

Ultimately, Mars conjunct Chiron is an opportunity to align our personal will (Mars) with the greater will (Chiron).

And since none of us really knows what this “greater will” is, the best we can do is to aim to heal our inner Mars, by embracing our ‘selfishness’ and taking full responsibility for our actions.
