  1. It was MZ’s recent post of the remarkable Taimane Gardner, whose first name means “Diamond” in Samoan, that made me think of Diamond Fingers and search out this video to submit.

    Diamond Fingers is the nickname of the Guinean guitarist Sékou Diabaté whom I had the great privilege of hearing with the Guinean band Bembeya Jazz at the House of Blues here in New Orleans one Bastille Day during the early 2000s.

    Bembeya Jazz was originally active between 1961 and 1991, and Diabaté was one of its founding members. After the breakup of Bembeya Jazz, he pursued a solo career – and still does, as far as I know – though he remains active with Bembeya Jazz, reunited since the late nineties, as well.
