NOTE: The article below is an excerpt from the booklet “Sexuality, the Sea of Creation,” written by the late Mary Ritley, H.W.,M. and published by The Prosperos. We present it in celebration of Pride Month.

The Undivided Self
by Mary Ritley, H.W.,M.

So what is it  about sex? A very good question. What about it? The word sex, as mostly used, refers to gender. In ordinary English, male or female. And if that isn’t based on a dimensional viewpoint, nothing is.

But sexuality, properly speaking, isn’t dimensional at all, much less divided into two neat categories. Sexuality is energy. And energy, on any and every level, is both positive and negative—that is, both male and female. Our training may confuse the issue somewhat when we refer to its seemingly solid manifestations (such as people, of whatever sex)—but fortunately, our scientific information isn’t muddied with moral issues.

Electricity, for instance—that’s one form of energy. Both positive and negative. If it isn’t both it simply isn’t. Period. The atom itself is energy, both positive and negative (male and female) charges. And since our world is composed of atoms, we’re unavoidably immersed in a virtual sea of sexuality. But be that as it may, we do tend to look at male and female, positive and negative, as two different things. In reality, they are not separate at all, any more than the two poles (positive and negative) of a magnet are separate. You haven’t got a positive or a negative magnet: all you have is magnet, plain and simple. In short, no only-male or only-female. Just male/female.

Thus far so good. Even the most orthodox have to admit that. But the impartiality ends when it comes to man himself. For despite all those male/female atoms of his, man is supposed to be an all-one-or-the-other proposition, either male or female. Obviously, this can’t be so, even on the atomic level. Taking it a step further, even chromosomes are both male and female, and sperm and ovum must be both male and female for conception to take place.

This happy arrangement, however, supposedly doesn’t last. At least, the newborn infant is at once inspected and pronounced either male or female, on observing the genitals. This is not to quarrel with the observation, but there is an obvious question to ask:

What happened to the “other half”?

Where did all the femaleness of the male infant go, and vice versa? Did it die out, or simply disappear? Where did it go? Nowhere at all. From the atom up, we are all male/female, not male or female. This is not confined to the biological structure alone. Sexuality is energy, which is in itself a formless force. It expresses in innumerable forms, and the biological structure is just one of these. But man is more than a mere biological machine.

The reality of man is consciousness. Consciousness is energy. Energy—male and female. So in the very reality of his being, man is male/female principle. One very important fact has to be stressed here. Sexuality, like the magnet, cannot be divided into two halves. It cannot be more positive than negative, any more than the positive pole of a magnet can be stronger than the negative pole. So man can never be more male than female, or more female than male. Maleness and femaleness, in reality, are equally present in his nature.

Unfortunately, our early training says otherwise. The child is taught to believe that he is either male or female. If male, he must show only those traits labelled “masculine.” Any tendencies to be “feminine” are avoided or repressed. The reverse is true of the supposedly female child. Each learns to repress the part of himself that supposedly belongs to the “opposite” sex. The consequences can be grave enough from the ordinary point of view—such as when the small boy grows up to be contemptuous of women, or the small girl grows up fearful of men. But from another standpoint, the results are far more serious. The child has learned to distrust a part of himself, not of someone else. His feelings toward the “other” sex can only be the outpicturing of his feelings toward that part of his own nature.

Yin/Yang — the balance

Nowadays we find a slightly more enlightened point of view. Every male, it says, has some female traits, and every female has some male traits. But it still maintains that only a certain amount of maleness or femaleness may be expressed in the “normal” person. Too much of either is unacceptable, Moreover, it dictates how this maleness or femaleness may be expressed. A woman can now take up traditionally masculine sports, a man can develop a taste for poetry, but even so, limits are imposed.

Innately, man does sense his wholeness, his undivided maleness/femaleness, because it is his real nature. As consciousness, he is both male and female and knows himself to be such. Hence the sense of incompleteness he feels as a male or female creature. Through the centuries, man has always striven to experience this union that is his real nature. But since he has believed that he is unisexual, he has usually sought his “other half” in someone else, someone of the “opposite” sex.

Even so, man is always alone with his own state of awareness, and can experience only that which is in his own awareness. The masculinity or femininity he perceives in another is, in reality, something that exists only in his own awareness. Otherwise, he could not perceive it in another at all. “The other,” after all, exists only as his awareness of the other.

In our own culture, seeking, finding and uniting with the “other half” is quite acceptable. But this, too, is based on the notion that there are two separate and opposite sexes. Sexual relations are acceptable only between people of “opposite” sexes. But bear in mind that there are really no opposite sexes at all, since everyone is both male and female. In short, every sexual relationship is a relationship between two male/females. From this viewpoint there is simply no difference between a heterosexual relationship and a homosexual one. Both involve two male/females. Both are simply expressions of male/female sexuality—no more, no less.        Bearing in mind that one is never more male than female, or vice versa, we can see that our traditional stereotypes of the homosexual must be re-examined. Actually, the fluttery Southern belle is every bit as masculine as the dyke in black leathers. The only difference is that one expresses her masculinity and the other does not. And one might add, both are equally feminine, in reality.

Sexuality is creative energy, male/female creativity. Any form of creativity must involve the use of both male and female factors. To suppress one’s maleness or femaleness on any level is to suppress part of one’s creative ability. This is so whether we speak of creative thinking, of composing, painting, or developing healthy sexual relationships. Man’s latent intuitive and creative capacities can function only when, in consciousness, the male/female factors are allowed full expression. He must recognize and accept these factors of himself. Then, and only then, does he feel complete within himself, no longer a mere half, but a Whole Man.

On love
A life without love is of no account. Don’t ask yourself what kind of love you should seek, spiritual or material, divine or mundane, eastern or western…divisions only lead to more divisions. Love has no labels, no definitions. It is what it is, pure and simple.                                                      ― Shams of Tabrizi
