This image was recently taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It shows the process of a star being born inside a cloud of dust and gas. The dense core of this cloud is thought to be a stellar embryo some 650 light years away from us, inside the Milky Way galaxy. This protostar phase can last for about a half-billion years. When the temperature and pressure gets so high that nuclear fusion begins, we can say that the cloud has given birth to a star. The cloud is known to contain complex organic chemicals that could serve as the building blocks of life itself.
