The Anthropocene is a proposed epoch dating from the commencement of significant human impact on the Earth‘s geology and ecosystems, including, but not limited to, anthropogenic climate change.[1][2][3][4][5]
As of August 2016, neither the International Commission on Stratigraphy nor the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) has yet officially approved the term as a recognized subdivision of geological time,[3][6][7] although the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) of the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy (SQS) of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), voted to proceed towards a formal golden spike (GSSP) proposal to define the Anthropocene epoch in the Geologic Time Scale and presented the recommendation to the International Geological Congress on 29 August 2016.[8]
Various different start dates for the Anthropocene have been proposed, ranging from the beginning of the Agricultural Revolution 12,000–15,000 years ago, to as recent as the Trinity test in 1945. As of February 2018, the ratification process continues and thus a date remains to be decided definitively, but the latter date has been more favoured than others.
The most recent period of the Anthropocene has been referred to by several authors as the Great Acceleration during which the socioeconomic and earth system trends are increasing dramatically, especially after the Second World War. For instance, the Geological Society termed the year 1945 as The Great Acceleration.[9]
An early concept for the Anthropocene was the Noosphere by Vladimir Vernadsky, who in 1938 wrote of “scientific thought as a geological force.”[10] Scientists in the Soviet Union appear to have used the term “anthropocene” as early as the 1960s to refer to the Quaternary, the most recent geological period.[11][full citation needed]Ecologist Eugene F. Stoermer subsequently used “anthropocene” with a different sense in the 1980s[12] and the term was widely popularized in 2000 by atmospheric chemist Paul J. Crutzen,[13] who regards the influence of human behavior on Earth’s atmosphere in recent centuries as so significant as to constitute a new geological epoch.
In 2008, the Stratigraphy Commission of the Geological Society of London considered a proposal to make the Anthropocene a formal unit of geological epoch divisions.[3][14] A majority of the commission decided the proposal had merit and should be examined further. Independent working groups of scientists from various geological societies have begun to determine whether the Anthropocene will be formally accepted into the Geological Time Scale.[15]
The term “anthropocene” is informally used in scientific contexts.[16] The Geological Society of America entitled its 2011 annual meeting: Archean to Anthropocene: The past is the key to the future.[17] The new epoch has no agreed start-date, but one proposal, based on atmospheric evidence, is to fix the start with the Industrial Revolution ca. 1780, with the invention of the steam engine.[14][18] Other scientists link the new term to earlier events, such as the rise of agriculture and the Neolithic Revolution (around 12,000 years BP). Evidence of relative human impact – such as the growing human influence on land use, ecosystems, biodiversity, and species extinction – is substantial; scientists think that human impact has significantly changed (or halted) the growth of biodiversity.[19] Those arguing for earlier dates posit that the proposed Anthropocene may have begun as early as 14,000 to 15,000 years before present, based on geologic evidence; this has led other scientists to suggest that “the onset of the Anthropocene should be extended back many thousand years”;[20]:1 this would be closely synchronous with the current term, Holocene.
In January 2015, 26 of the 38 members of the International Anthropocene Working Group published a paper suggesting the Trinity test on 16 July 1945 as the starting point of the proposed new epoch.[21] However, a significant minority supports one of several alternative dates.[21] A March 2015 report suggested either 1610 or 1964 as the beginning of Anthropocene.[22] Other scholars point to the diachronous character of the physical strata of the Anthropocene, arguing that onset and impact are spread out over time, not reducible to a single instant or date of start.[23]
A January 2016 report on the climatic, biological, and geochemical signatures of human activity in sediments and ice cores suggested the era since the mid-20th century should be recognised as a geological epoch distinct from the Holocene.[24]
The Anthropocene Working Group met in Oslo in April 2016 to consolidate evidence supporting the argument for the Anthropocene as a true geologic epoch.[25] Evidence was evaluated and the group voted to recommend “Anthropocene” as the new geological age in August 2016.[8] Should the International Commission on Stratigraphy approve the recommendation, the proposal to adopt the term will have to be ratified by the IUGS before its formal adoption as part of the geologic time scale.[7]
The name Anthropocene is a combination of anthropo- from anthropos (Ancient Greek: ἄνθρωπος) meaning “human” and -cene from kainos (Ancient Greek: καινός) meaning “new” or “recent.”[26][27]
As early as 1873, the Italian geologist Antonio Stoppani acknowledged the increasing power and effect of humanity on the Earth’s systems and referred to an ‘anthropozoic era’.[28]
Although the biologist Eugene Stoermer is often credited with coining the term “anthropocene”, it was in informal use in the mid-1970s. Paul Crutzen is credited with independently re-inventing and popularizing it. Stoermer wrote, “I began using the term ‘anthropocene’ in the 1980’s, but never formalized it until Paul contacted me.”[29] Crutzen has explained, “I was at a conference where someone said something about the Holocene. I suddenly thought this was wrong. The world has changed too much. So I said: ‘No, we are in the Anthropocene.’ I just made up the word on the spur of the moment. Everyone was shocked. But it seems to have stuck.”[30]:21 In 2008, Zalasiewicz suggested in GSA Today that an anthropocene epoch is now appropriate.[14]

LOS ANGELES—In the hopes that the experience provides a valuable lesson about adherence to the law, Judge Steve Kim responded to Lori Loughlin’s money laundering, bribery, and racketeering charges Friday by sentencing the former Full House actress to 100 hours of community theatre. “As punishment for the dishonesty, flippancy, and disregard for the law Ms. Loughlin has displayed, I’ve sentenced her to perform in a minimum of 12 different community theatre productions around the greater Los Angeles area,” said Judge Kim, who expressed his intention of sending a message to all those who believe themselves to be above the law through the actress’s mandatory court-ordered participation in small-scale productions of The Pajama Game, Oklahoma, Little Shop of Horrors, and an upcoming modern retelling of The Crucible. “Loughlin will be required to run lines with a designated sponsor to ensure she’s completely off-book for each production, and learn all necessary choreography and blocking. She will even be required to work as a grip when needed. Everyone should know what it’s like to work for weeks on a play that goes up for an audience of nine people—if Ms. Loughlin had known what was at stake, perhaps she would have thought twice about her crimes.” At press time, the judge had added an extra punishment to the sentence requiring Loughlin to also appear at the poorly attended basement cast parties following the conclusion of each production.

Last night, Barbara Marx Hubbard, a monumental way-shower, visionary and peacemaker, left our world to begin her journey to her next home.
She had become such a steadfast, constant and reliable voice in our community, that it seemed as though she’d be with us always…supporting, innovating and paving the way to the new world she so passionately labored to birth.
Now we’re left to honor her legacy by living in the world
with what Barbara taught us about ourselves, our possibilities and our potential.

Barbara Marx Hubbard, the beloved author and visionary, has died at the age of 89. Hubbard’s sad passing was announced on a Caring Bridge page that had been set up to update fans on the author’s health and condition. The last update on the page said that Hubbard had been taken off of life support at around 4:30 p.m. local time in Colorado on April 10. Hubbard’s time of death was given as 6:30 p.m.
Since April 3, Hubbard was being treated at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado, after she awoke that morning with a swollen and painful right knee. Following an interview with Unity radio in order to promote an upcoming event, Hubbard went to see her doctor who admitted to the emergency room in Loveland. Later, Hubbard was moved to the Orthopedic treatment area. The following day, a “minimally invasive” tap was performed to reduce the swelling.
By April 7, Hubbard’s condition had worsened. Gafni wrote on the Caring Bridge page, “I am impacted by Barbara. I am a better person because of Barbara. Let those be the words of our prayer.”
On April 6, a doctor fully disinfected Hubbard’s knee after she “did not wake easily in the morning.” In that posting, it’s written that Hubbard’s co-founder of the Evolutionary Church, Marc Gafni, came to Loveland from Portland to be by her side.
Earlier on April 10, an update on the page said that “Barbara’s family invited people into a meditation with Barbara on the “Spirit plane.”” That update added that Hubbard had been given a heavy dose of sedative.
Hubbard had lived since 2016 in the Sunrise Ranch community in Loveland. On April 8, a post on the page said that Hubbard’s family felt as though “she’s preparing to leave.”

Barbara Marx Hubbard (born Barbara Marx; December 22, 1929, died April 10, 2019) [1] was a futurist, author and public speaker. She is credited with the concepts of ‘The Synergy Engine’[2] and the ‘birthing’ of humanity.[3]
A Jewish agnostic,[4] her father was toy maker Louis Marx. In her youth she attended the Dalton School in New York City. She studied at L’Ecole des Sciences Politiques at La Sorbonne in Paris during her junior year of college,[5] and received a B.A. cum laude in Political Science from Bryn Mawr College in 1951.[6]
As an author, speaker, and co-founder and president of the Foundation for Conscious Evolution, she posits that humanity now, as never before, is on the threshold of a quantum leap. If we are able to integrate newly emergent scientific, social, and spiritual capacities, we could transform ourselves to move beyond our current global crises to a magnificent future equal to our vast new potential.[citation needed]
She is the subject of a biography by author Neale Donald Walsch, The Mother of Invention: The Legacy of Barbara Marx Hubbard and the Future of “YOU.”[7] Her name was placed in nomination for the vice-presidency of the United States on the Democratic ticket in 1984, and at which convention she gave a speech upon being nominated.[8
Katie Bouman was a MIT postdoctoral student when she led a team that designed one of the algorithms that led to capturing the first images of a black hole.

Katherine Bouman had a secret: An algorithm she’d developed had stitched together a picture of a black hole. She told nobody except her colleagues. Until today. That’s when Event Horizon Telescope team, of which Bouman is a member, unveiled the first image of a black hole.
Bouman, 29, a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, had been working on such an algorithm for almost six years, since she was a graduate student at MIT. She was one of about three dozen computer scientists who used algorithms to process data gathered by the Event Horizon Telescope project, a worldwide collaboration of astronomers, engineers and mathematicians.
Telescopes around the world collected high-frequency radio waves from the vicinity of Messier 87, a supermassive black hole 54 million light-years away. But atmospheric disturbance and the spareness of the measurements meant “an infinite number of possible images” could explain the data, Bouman said. Well-designed algorithms had to crunch through the chaos.
The image shared Wednesday, which has been likened to a molten doughnut or the Eye of Sauron or even a Rembrandt, is a composite of several such reconstructions. “We blurred two of the images and then averaged them to the other one to get the image that we showed today,” Bouman said. The ring of material that surrounds Messier 87, which has the mass of 6.5 billion suns, “is something that we were incredibly confident about.”

The Washington Post spoke with Bouman after the picture was unveiled. The following is lightly edited for clarity.
Q: You’re not an astronomer. So how did you get involved with taking a picture of a black hole?
A: I come from a computer science and electrical engineering background. I did my PhD in a computer vision group, where you try to understand images. And I heard about this project, this idea of imaging black holes. At the time I hardly even knew what a black hole was. But I tagged along to this meeting [where Shep Doeleman, the Harvard University astronomer who directs the Event Horizon Telescope project, was discussing black holes]. I had no idea what he was talking about, but when I left that meeting I knew that this is something that I wanted to work on.
I have an interest in how can we see things or measure things that are thought to be invisible to us. And how can we come up with unique ways to merge the instrumentation and algorithms to get at measuring things that you can’t measure with standard instruments.
Q: What was the algorithm’s role for this image, stitching together data from telescopes across the planet?
A: We have telescopes distributed around the world. For every two telescopes in the telescope array, we measure a single spatial frequency, which tells you something about like how fast things are changing.
We get this partial information. It’s almost like seeing one pixel in an image (but it’s in a different kind of domain). We have to come up with methods that take this really sparse, really noisy data, and try to find the image that might have caused those measurements.
What we have to end up doing is imposing things called “regularizors” or “priors” that allow us to say, “Okay, of all of the images that possibly could fit this data, this set of images is most likely.”
But the danger is we don’t want to inject additional information into the problem, so as to bias our result toward something that we would expect to see. We have spent an enormous amount of time making sure that what we were seeing was actually real and not just something that, even subconsciously, we might have imposed on the data.
[To remove the possibility of bias shared by the entire team, the project split its computer-imaging experts into four different groups, each working on a different sort of algorithm. They were not allowed to communicate.]
Q: When did you know the black hole was, well, a hole?
A: We were confident, at least, that we were seeing this ring-like feature. Still, we didn’t know that other teams would get the same result.
We all got together in a meeting in Cambridge, Mass., and on the second day of the meeting, we all revealed what picture we had reconstructed from the data. It was probably the most exciting moment I’ve ever had with the project.
When I saw that we all had reconstructed this ring, then I knew that it was an incredibly robust feature.
[For months afterward, the computer scientists tried to break their images. They developed new scripts or pipelines and trained those pipelines on data for disks; these astronomical structures don’t have any holes. But when the scientists fed the real telescope data back through the pipelines developed for disks, they reconstructed a ring. The feature existed.]
We didn’t get a disk. We still got that hole.

In 2012, in my capacity as Senior Editor for the Good Men Project, I edited an article titled “Escape the Act Like a Man Box” by Charlie Glickman. In his opening paragraph, Charlie wrote:
“I’ve been teaching workshops on male gender socialization for about 15 years or so. The foundation of my presentation is the Act Like a Man Box, which I learned about from Paul Kivel’s book, Men’s Work: How to Stop the Violence That Tears Our Lives Apart.”
Kivel’s Act Like a Man Box refers to the enforcement of a narrowly defined set of traditional rules for being a man. These rules are enforced through shaming and bullying, as well as promises of rewards, the purpose of which is to force conformity to our dominant culture of masculinity and to perpetuate the exploitation, domination, and marginalization of women and people who are queer, genderqueer and transgender.
In the early 1980’s, Kivel, Allan Creighton and others at the Oakland Men’s Project gave birth to this powerful central pillar of men’s work. They developed the Act Like a Man Box in their work with adolescents in public schools around the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1992, Kivel documented their workshop process in his book Men’s Work: How to Stop the Violence That Tears Our Lives Apart. It was here that Kivel published his act like a man box workshop, graphics, and everything we have come to define around the term.
In Kivel’s own words:
“In the early 1980’s I and others in the Oakland Men’s Project were working in diverse schools facilitating workshops on male and female socialization and violence in relationships. We developed the concepts and visuals of the Act Like a Man box and the Act Like a Lady box from student responses to images of men and women in popular media. We also used roleplays like our Father/son roleplay, and we developed exercises like the Men’s Costs and Men’s Benefits standups.
By the late 1980s we were doing this work not only with young people but with adults — especially men’s groups and adults who worked with young people. All of this was first published in 1992 in Helping Teens Stop Violence (by Allan Creighton and Paul Kivel) and Men’s Work ( by Paul Kivel). The work was widely available, used and adapted around the country.
In the mid 1990’s, Tony Porter, the founder of A CALL TO MEN, was doing men’s work in Rockland County, New York, as well as serving as the director of an alcohol and drug treatment program at Nyack Hospital. At that time, a local service organization, Volunteer Counseling Services, invited Paul Kivel to speak. Porter states it was then that he first heard the phrase “the act like a man box.”
Over time, Porter, who was working with populations of men in penitentiaries and other challenging spaces, determined that “the act like a man box” language would not work with these populations.
“Paul was on it, no question about that. He was on it. But the way he was saying it would not work for the men I was talking to. So I took that term, act like a man box, and I shortened it down to the man box.”
In 2010, Porter recorded his now famous TED Talk titled A Call to Men, which to date has been viewed over 2,600,000 times on the TED site alone. Porter drove the man box into global public awareness and made Kivel’s pioneering work “the act like a man box” into a household term “the man box.”
Porter doesn’t mince words about Kivel. He calls him, “A genius.”
“Paul Kivel made a lifetime impression on me. He’s been instrumental in what has become my life’s work. I’m indebted to him, forever,” Porter says.
Paul Kivel and the Oakland Men’s Project gave birth to the conceptual underpinning of “the act like a man box,” giving birth to a central part of men’s work. Tony Porter’s decades of work with men has furthered these ideas and made “the man box,” a globally recognized phrase.
Through decades of hard work and perseverance by these men, the man box has become a powerful and universally understood call for change and growth. And the work continues.
