Finding Your Self in the Modern Age
by Thane of Hawaii, Founder of The Prosperos

 Thane of Hawaii

The world  is progressing in every way. Science, sociology and economics are all in the field of advancement. The reason for our inability to absorb the gifts that these three departments hold out to us is due to the fact that too little attention has been given to the real needs of man. We need the cultivation of a science designed for the progression of man’s spirit.

We no longer have evidence of individual business and attainment. Because of regimentation, too few of us know what it means to plow a field and see that which we have sown harvested. Today we are all parts of a machine, each contributing or “sowing,” but the harvest of the machine is usually so great in its magnitudes that the individual “cogs” fail to ever realize the thrill of accomplishment, of seeing the finished product.

There is so much to learn in this regard. Modern industry is doing away with time and space. We all work with the regularity of clocks. A great majority of the people go to work at the same time, eat meals at the same time, go home at the same time, enjoy recreation at the same time, sleep at the same time. Because of the decline of interest in religious things we do not have fasting, and because of interest in diet, the world has never been fed so regularly and punctually before. These things are all good. I find no argument with them, except in the fact that unless the individual is filled with a great sense of dissatisfaction, he is likely to become a “victim” instead of the finished product that all this has been designed to accomplish….

[M]an needs more time in solitude. In the life of the average human being, periods of being alone are considered either a luxury or a penalty, rather than a necessity. The majority are afraid of being alone. This machine age does so much for us that when we are left alone for fifteen minutes we are confronted with the fact that we do not know how to entertain or employ ourselves…. [But] it is in absolute solitude we gain the greatest spiritual impetus that can be received by man.

“Come ye apart into a desert place,” the Way Shower has said. I used to think of this as a place where there was bareness filled with rocks, sand and sagebrush, and hot as hell. In recent years I have come to know that it means a place that is deserted, and cool with the presence of the Almighty. I do not know, my friend, what lesson you will derive from this, but I do know that in this lesson you have undoubtedly received meat for the greatest advancement.

Let us recognize and accept the glories of this modern age, but in that recognition we must include the development of another department of our being. This department includes the Spirit of the I Am. The time must arrive in your life when, being alone, you will find your own personal savior and teacher. Not someone who will talk to you, but someone who will be so real that it is your own self.

__________

Note: This excerpt from “Old Wine in New Bottles” was written in July, 1936, twenty years before Thane founded The Prosperos. It is still relevant, even now. The term “Way Shower” refers to Jesus.

On Perfection and Light… Lillian DeWaters was a great influence on Thane, and on the teachings of The Prosperos. Here is an inspiring quotation from her book, The Finished Kingdom:

In the science of God, we look toward the realm of Reality, we describe it,  we praise it, we have faith in it, and it manifests unto us. Is not everything already created, already perfect, already changeless, already prepared, already manifested in the finished Kingdom? High recognition brings one into the light and, automatically, he is lighted.

Light does not have to be acquainted with darkness in order to remove it. Should light search from plane to plane and from eternity to eternity, it would never find darkness for, where ever light might search, it would find only itself -– its own radiant brightness.
