Summer of Love begins June 21, 1967

The Chronicle’s front page from June 22, 1967, featured both war and peace — including a centerpiece story on the official beginning of the hippies’ Summer of Love.
“The hippies’ holy summer of love — and joy — officially arrived at dawn yesterday in a fog bank atop Twin Peaks,” Chronicle reporter Jack Viets wrote.
“There were strong vibrations of love,” said Randall DeLeon. “People really got along well.”
DeLeon was among the hippies who had gathered on the peak at 4:30 a.m. “to summon the gods and other kindly influences to San Francisco for the summer solstice.”
“I don’t think anybody thought the sun was really going to rise,” he said, “but I stood up here and I pointed to where I knew it was and I said, ‘Get bright, get bright, get bright.’ ”
The sun did indeed rise that morning.
