TO A GROSS MATERIALIST

— by Arthur Guiterman

Let us agree on a plan

    To simplify further communion:

I am a person, a man,

And you are a chemical union.

Or, if you wish to refine

    And further consider the question,

I am a thing of design,

    And you’re an atomic congestion.

Then of the hid and the known

We’ll talk to our full satisfaction,

I with a mind of my own

And you by some cellular action,

While we are piloted still

    Along our terrestrial courses,

I by a soul and a will,

    And you by mechanical forces.

Arthur Guiterman (November 20, 1871 – January 11, 1943) was an American writer best known for his humorous poems. Wikipedia
